I was the first one up, and soon others were getting out of bed. I had some toast, vegemite and raspberry jam from grandma. Emmy makes hers slightly differently – and I miss hers.
I dressed in my new gear and got the group all ready. We managed to pack the suburban and be on the road by 8.10am – which is a good effort. It was my first time in a suburban and it was one huge car!
The drive took just over an hour to get to the ski village. We parked in an underground car park and dressed into the ski gear. My pants were awesome – I couldn’t wait to get out on the slopes.
We caught the gondola to the ski field. There was only one lift open, but it was a good run and the lift was fast.
For my first go I did some great snow plowering pretending to have no idea and be scared. There were worried it would be a long day. The next time we stopped I skied properly and it all came back to me. The day only got better as we went on.
I filmed each run with the gopro and asked Hannah to take some footage of me skiing. It was nice snow considering it was so early in the year.
We stopped for lunch after getting in 5 or 6 runs. We had a big cheese and ham and pineapple pizza and the jam and peanut butter sambos Jenny had packed us off with. I also ate a wrap which I made because I knew I’d be so hungry.
Hannah and Sandra did one run in the afternoon then d
ecided they wanted to go in and walk through the shops. That was fine with Mica and I.
We did close to 20 runs by the end of the day. We just made it on the last lift before it closed at 4pm. The sun was out for the whole day and I was so warm I had to lose a layer.
I just caught it on film, but if I was 20 secs slower I would have hit a deer. Two ran across in front of Mica. It was quite a laugh. I was disappointed because if I had hit it (and I was skiing rather fast) I would have undoubtedly got a video on youtube that had a million hits!
By the last few runs I had my speed up and was doing some tight carving using the edges of the skis to carve. The lesson we had in Japan was useful and I recalled what Simon had said with the little pointers to perfect the carve. I found that you really have to be going fast to let the ski’s carve for you. I hope dads fitness is up to keep up with Harry and I.
We made it back to the car easily and undressed and hit the road. My shins were sore and a quite red form the boots. I was hoping by ‘wearing’ in my shins now they wouldn’t hurt come Canada.
The sunset behind us was bright orange and lit up the surrounding mountains. It was a nice drive home. The two siblings fell asleep in the back there was so much room to stretch out!
It was hard driving because there were lots of deer around. It’s the same issue in Australia with the kangaroos. I have seen at least 5 now on the side of the road, or crossing causing us to slow down.
We made it home safely. After unpacking the gear and leaving the skis in the car, we sat down for dinner. Grandma had made her famous spaghetti sauce and pasta and we gobbled it down.
After we jumped in the hot tube. The whole family plus me! It was fun because being such a big family everyone had something to say. We must have been in there for a good hour and a half and not once was there silence.
After the hot tub we all watched Crocodile Dundee, the first one. It was fun and there was lots of laughs.
We all retired early on and I slept very well after a great day of skiing.
